normakte / CE marking
The marking itself does not change. What changes is what it means from 20 January 2027 — and when a number must appear beside it.
The CE marking is neither an award nor a test mark. It is a declaration by the manufacturer that the product meets all applicable Union harmonisation legislation that provides for it. It is affixed visibly, legibly and indelibly, before placing on the market.
Not always. The number follows the CE marking only where the notified body is involved in production control — that is, in the procedures of Art. 25(2)(a),(b),(c) and (3)(b),(c),(d). For Module A, internal production control, no number appears beside it.
Art. 46 lists them expressly. Four of the seven points concern the marking: the CE affixed in breach of the rules; the CE not affixed; the number missing or wrongly affixed; the contact details missing or incomplete. The consequence is not merely a reprimand: if the state persists, making available can be restricted or prohibited and the product recalled.
| Particular | Basis |
|---|---|
| Model, series or type, year of construction, batch or serial number | Art. 10(5) |
| Name or registered trade mark, postal address, website or email — with a single point of contact | Art. 10(6) |
| Where the instructions are digital: how to access them | Art. 10(7)(a) |
The year of construction is a new point to watch: it goes on the nameplate and is the year manufacturing was completed, not the year of delivery.
Where the product is covered by several Union acts requiring an EU declaration of conformity, a single declaration is drawn up for all those acts.
Art. 21(3) Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 · Art. 28(3) Regulation (EU) 2024/2847
From 2027 one CE marking carries two regulations: if the machine is also a product with digital elements, the Cyber Resilience Act applies as well — no second CE. For software without a physical carrier, the marking appears on the EU declaration of conformity or on the website, not on the product.
